Potty Time

Hi. Didn't realize it had been quite so long. Should have, though.

Anywho, water under the bridge, right?

Our nightly ritual includes Handsome using the potty right before bath time so that he doesn't get snuggled into bed only to scream down the stairs that he needs to use the potty. Ideally, it works. In actuality, sometimes he just likes to scream down the stairs.

With that being said, Junior watches Handsome do his nightly routine. DH has been putting Junior on the potty each night just to see if he would do anything. He does nothing, but he sits there just like his big brother does because he does everything his big brother does. Everything.

Junior has figured out how to force himself to pee. After his diaper comes off. On the carpet. Because he thinks it's funny. It's not. Well, except for the proud look on his face as he laughs delightedly, jumps as much as a 20 month old can, points to the floor to show off the wet spot and looks at you for your must-be-proud reaction.

He has never managed to pee in the potty though. Until two nights ago. He forced a few drops out and thought he was the best thing since sliced bread (which he doesn't like, but that's a different story). Then last night? He peed in the potty!!! Go Junior, go Junior, go, go, go Junior. (<== must dance along with this part).

So at 20 months old, Junior is starting to potty train himself. Am I going to start actual potty training soon since he has shown such potential? Absolutely not. Nope. No way. Not any time soon. Potty training is stressful, and I don’t need stress right now. I’ll add a post or two about that stress momentarily. Plus, I know Junior. Junior will pee in the potty when he darn well feels like it, and then just to be funny, he’ll save a bit to pee on the ground in front of you. I don’t want to deal with that just yet. I love Junior, but he is stubborn to the nth degree.

Mommy, I peed on the potty!

Ok, Handsome didn't tell me he peed on the potty, he didn't know he had done anything and he barely speaks single words, much less actually sentences.

This weekend I bought a little potty for Handsome. I wanted him to get used to seeing it so that it wouldn't be something he was afraid of. He has been sitting on it and playing with it ever since. Even cries when I take him off his potty to get in the bathtub. I have told him that's his little potty and it is used for peeing and pooping, but who knows how much of that actually registers with him.

He often will pee right after I turn on the water to fill the bathtub or shortly after I put him in the bathtub. Well, last night I turned on the water and told Handsome that if he needed to pee he should sit on his potty. He laughed - which usually is his version of "yes" or "ok" - so I put him on the potty. He sat there - with his diaper still on - until I decided he was done brushing his teeth - yes, I know, normally gross, but he did still have his diaper on. When I took the toothbrush away and then went to take his diaper off, I noticed his diaper was still wet. He had peed on the potty!!! Again, completely a mistake, but I cheered him on and told him what he did anyway. I let him sit there for a while longer just in case there might be more to come. He cried when I took him off the potty to go into the bathtub, but there was no more pee pee in the potty.

His new thing? He seems to have picked up the Dagaare word for Poop - bin (pronounced bean). After he has a poopy diaper that has been changed he comes downstairs and points to his diaper while chanting "bin bin bin bin bin" and laughing as if telling the parent that stayed downstairs what the other parent just had to go through.

Potty Training.

So I found out that the Montessori school that I want to put Handsome in when he turns 2 1/2 years old requires that he is potty trained.

Does that sound impossible to anyone else? Aren't boys supposed to be more difficult than girls to potty train? Handsome doesn't even know when he is peeing yet. He peed when DH put him in the bathtub this weekend and then started crying because he didn't know what he was doing. All the readiness signs are things like "Your child can tell you when he is peeing." Problem one: he doesn't know how to tell us. Problem two: he doesn't even know when he's peeing in the first place.

Hopefully in a year he'll be better.

He has another doctor's appointment in a month so that the doctor can tell us whether she thinks Handsome is going to be obese or if he is back to being underfed, and whether he is developmentally slow with his words. It should be fun.

Peed on my Foot

Yes, it's true. Handsome peed on my foot. I changed his diaper right before his bath and was brushing his teeth while the water in the tub warmed up. I suppose the water flowing sound worked it's magic and Handsome peed. Right on my foot. I screamed mostly because I didn't know what was happening and then Handsome started crying. Then I started laughing so he did too.

Luckily it was in the bathroom right before his bath so it was easy to clean.

Pee Stain

Handsome peed on my carpet last night!!! Yes, it is my fault, so I can't get angry with him but I was certainly tempted.

Typically what happens is that when I turn the water on to fill the tub he pees where it is safely contained in his diaper. If he doesn't pee at that time, then he will pee as soon as he is in the water - although don't tell this to DH. Since he is safely drained, when the bath is over I let him run around his room naked so that he can further dry out and not be in a diaper for a little longer. I am trying to prevent diaper rash by doing this, or else make the redness that he has go away. He needs a break from the diaper occasionally, right?

Last night he apparently didn't drain himself properly before the naked run. He was standing on the other side of his bedroom as I was turned the other direction getting out his diaper and then I hear this trickling behind me. I didn't know what to do!! I first ran over to him and tried to startle him into stopping. He stopped for a split second and then continued peeing with a confused look on his face. Then I stood there with my own dumbfounded look wondering, what do I do? If I pick him up, he'll send pee the whole way through the room. I can't stick my hand down there because I'll get pee on my hands and it'll fall through my fingers anyhow. Finally I think well, I'll just bring the diaper to him and set it under the flow.

By the time I had the diaper to him, he was finished.

So, I put the diaper on him, call DH to get the stain remover, and go get a towel.

You know what I'll do tonight after Handsome's bath? I'll let him run around and air things out. I just don't learn that quickly.

Yellow Bathwater

When Handsome takes his bath, the water will inevitably make him pee. I gave up caring a while ago. Usually he will pee in his diaper when the water is running, but before I put him in the water. Even when this happens, he will wait until I've finished washing him to pee once again in water. I don't know how he has so much water in him.

Anyway, a couple days ago, I was holding him standing in the water and he peed. Of course, normally when he pees, he doesn't really notice, but this time it made a noise as it splashed in the water. He looked down at himself peeing and seemed so proud of himself. When he finished he looked up at me like, "How cool was that? Can we do that again?" I told him I had no power over that and sat him down in the slightly yellow water.

Yes, it sounds gross, but I used soap. I was not about to refill the entire bathtub again. He'd just pee in the new bathwater.
